The Problem With Active-Heavy Skincare on Melanin-Rich Skin

Most exfoliating skincare was built for lighter skin tones. For melanin-rich skin, harsh AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids — the active exfoliating ingredients found in most body serums and toners) often trigger new dark spots instead of fading them. Here's why NO FLARE is formulated differently — and what the science says.

If you have melanin-rich skin and you've been told that AHAs are the answer to KP, dark spots, and ingrown hairs — you've probably also experienced the other side of that advice. The sting. The irritation. And then, a few weeks later, new dark marks where there weren't any before.

This is one of the most common experiences in the melanin-rich skincare community — and in communities that know this problem by other names: manchas, marcas, piel oscura después de la depilación. Why "Active-Heavy" Skincare Often Backfires on Darker Skin Tones

Most exfoliating skincare is built around glycolic acid — the smallest AHA molecule available. It penetrates quickly, deeply, and aggressively. For lighter skin tones, that speed is often fine. For melanin-rich skin, it frequently crosses a threshold that triggers post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — the dark marks left behind after any skin irritation.

PIH happens because melanin-rich skin contains more active melanocytes — the cells that produce pigment. Any time these skin tones experience inflammation, those cells go into overdrive. The result is a dark mark that can outlast the original irritation by weeks or months.

The research confirms it. A 2024 study published in JAAD International found that individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types III–VI are significantly more prone to PIH following inflammatory triggers — including those caused by topical exfoliants. (PMC11514325)

The cruel irony: the product meant to fade dark spots creates new ones in the process. This isn't a rare reaction — it's predictable biology. And it's why so many women with melanin-rich skin cycle through products, see initial improvement, and then watch their skin get worse before abandoning the routine entirely.


What Makes NO FLARE Different

NO FLARE was built around one question: what does effective exfoliation look like when PIH is the primary risk? The answer required choosing different ingredients entirely.

AVA uses Mandelic Acid — not glycolic acid

Mandelic Acid is the largest AHA molecule. Because of its size, it penetrates the skin slowly and evenly — delivering exfoliation without the aggressive spike that triggers inflammation. It has been studied and recommended by dermatologists who specialize in skin of color specifically because of its low PIH risk profile.

AVA is formulated at pH 3.73 — the optimal range for Mandelic Acid efficacy — and buffered with Centella Asiatica (Cica), Aloe Barbadensis, Panthenol, and Allantoin. These ingredients are there to actively calm the skin during exfoliation, reducing the inflammatory response that causes new dark spots.

NORA uses LHA — not a traditional BHA

LHA (Capryloyl Salicylic Acid) is a fat-soluble acid that works inside the follicle — where ingrown hairs begin and where KP buildup forms. Unlike standard salicylic acid, LHA stays closer to the follicle opening, delivering targeted action without the systemic irritation of deeper-penetrating acids. NORA contains LHA at 0.30% — chosen specifically for tolerability.

NORA also contains Bakuchiol — a plant-derived alternative to retinol. A 2019 randomized controlled trial published in the British Journal of Dermatology (Dhaliwal et al.) found Bakuchiol comparable to retinol in improving skin texture and pigmentation, with significantly less irritation. For melanin-rich skin where retinol sensitivity is a real concern, Bakuchiol offers meaningful results without the risk.


The Safety Data

Dermatological Testing — HRIPT

Both AVA and NORA underwent Human Repeated Insult Patch Testing (HRIPT) at J.S. Hamilton Poland — an accredited dermatological laboratory certified by PCA/ILAC-MRA (Laboratory AB 079).

Across 50 subjects and 10 applications, zero adverse reactions were recorded for either product. The study was conducted under the supervision of a registered dermatologist-venereologist (MD, PhD) and carried out in accordance with Cosmetics Europe guidelines and the Helsinki Declaration.

Both products also passed full microbial testing (USP 32 NF 27), heavy metal screening via ICP-OES (all results: Not Detected), and stability testing at both 50°C and -5°C.


The System Logic

Active-heavy skincare typically asks: how do we deliver the most potent actives possible? NO FLARE asks a different question: how do we deliver effective results without triggering the inflammatory response that makes melanin-rich skin worse?

AVA (Step 1) addresses what's visible on the surface — texture, follicle buildup, uneven tone. NORA (Step 2) addresses what's happening underneath — inside the follicle, at the barrier level. Used together, they work on the full cycle: not just the symptom, but the process that keeps creating it.
