Dark spots & PIH

The dark marks left after shaving or waxing are called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) — your skin's reaction to irritation. For melanin-rich skin, any inflammation triggers the cells that produce pigment (melanocytes) to go into overdrive. The result is a dark mark that can outlast the irritation by weeks or months.

The key isn't just treating the mark after it appears. It's reducing the inflammation that causes it in the first place.

The TikTok conversation is largely correct. Glycolic acid is the smallest AHA molecule — it penetrates fast and deep. For lighter skin tones, that's often fine. For darker skin tones, it frequently causes enough irritation to trigger a new pigment response — meaning you fade one dark spot and create two more.

The better option for melanin-rich skin: mandelic acid. It's a larger molecule, penetrates slowly and evenly, and exfoliates without the irritation spike. Widely recommended by dermatologists who specialize in skin of color.

High-concentration glycolic acid peels — especially at-home versions — are one of the most common causes of new dark spots on darker skin. If something is burning more than a mild tingle, that's your skin telling you to stop.

Usually a mix of two things: friction hyperpigmentation (from repeated rubbing of clothing, movement, or skin-on-skin contact) and PIH from shaving or waxing. Both produce similar dark patches and in most cases, both are present at the same time.

The biggest reason it won't fade: tight leggings and jeans keep triggering new pigment production faster than the old marks can clear. The skin never gets a chance to recover.

To actually make progress — reduce the friction source while consistently using a gentle exfoliant and barrier-supporting oil. It takes longer than most people expect, but it does work.

Ingrown hairs cause two problems: the physical bump, and the inflammatory response around it. For melanin-rich skin, that inflammation becomes a dark mark that outlasts the bump by weeks — and if you're shaving regularly, you're creating new marks faster than old ones can fade.

The only way out is to address what's happening inside the follicle. Oil-soluble acids like LHA (Capryloyl Salicylic Acid) reach inside where the ingrown hair begins, reducing the buildup that causes it — and by extension, the mark that follows.

Honestly: it depends. Recent PIH can begin to visibly improve in 4–8 weeks with consistent use of the right products. Older or deeper marks can take 3–6 months. Marks that have been there for years are the hardest and may need a dermatologist.

The most important factor: stop new marks from forming at the same time you're fading old ones. If your routine is treating PIH but also causing irritation, you're running in place.


Texture, KP & strawberry legs

"Strawberry legs" is usually a mix of oxidized sebum in open pores, ingrown hairs, and KP. What makes it worse: physical scrubbing, harsh exfoliants, anything that causes surface irritation.

What actually helps: a gentle, consistent oil-soluble acid (like LHA) that reaches inside the follicle, combined with a lightweight non-comedogenic oil. Consistency matters more than intensity — two or three times a week done gently will always beat daily aggressive treatment.

Shaving: Use a sharp single-blade razor, shave with the grain (not against it), always use a lubricant, and apply a barrier-supporting product immediately after. Never shave dry.

Waxing: Removes from the root so fewer ingrowns — but the pulling still causes inflammation. Hard wax is gentler than strip wax for sensitive melanin-rich skin.

Laser hair removal: The most effective long-term solution. Less hair = less irritation = fewer marks. Requires a provider experienced with darker skin tones and the right laser (Nd:YAG is generally recommended). The wrong laser can cause permanent hyperpigmentation — do your research before booking.

Depilatory creams: Dissolve hair chemically without cutting. Can be gentler on the follicle for some — but patch test first, the chemicals can also irritate.

Whatever method you use: what you do after matters as much as the method. Calm the skin, support the barrier, and don't exfoliate for at least 24–48 hours after hair removal.

Keratosis pilaris is a buildup of keratin inside the hair follicle that creates rough, bumpy texture — often described as permanent goosebumps. Very common and completely harmless, but frustrating.

On darker skin tones, the bumps are often accompanied by dark marks around each follicle — making the texture appear more dramatic. This is PIH at the follicle level, caused by the chronic low-grade irritation of the keratin buildup.

Most effective approach: chemical exfoliation (mandelic acid or LHA, not physical scrubs — scrubs create micro-irritation that worsens the pigmentation) plus consistent barrier moisturization. Results take time but they're real.

Ashy skin on darker tones is almost always a skin barrier issue, not just dryness. When the barrier is compromised, skin can't hold onto moisture — so applying lotion on top gives temporary relief but doesn't fix the problem. It's like pouring water into a leaking cup.

Barrier repair needs three things: ceramides (to fill structural gaps), a humectant like hyaluronic acid or glycerin (to draw water in), and a lightweight non-comedogenic oil like squalane (to seal it). Over-exfoliation is one of the most common causes of barrier damage — if you're using many acids, reducing frequency often helps more than adding more products.


Reactions, burning & sensitive skin

A mild tingle when applying an acid is normal — that's the active working. But burning, prolonged stinging, or visible redness is your skin saying something is wrong. For melanin-rich skin, this distinction matters more than for lighter skin tones, because that reaction triggers PIH.

Most common causes: concentration too high, pH too low, applying on damp or broken skin, using multiple actives at once, or glycolic acid on sensitized skin.

If something burns: rinse immediately. Don't push through it. The inflammation from a bad reaction creates more dark spots than the product was ever going to treat.

For sensitive melanin-rich skin: patch test everything, introduce one new product at a time, and always start with the lowest concentration available. Slower is always better.

This is one of the most common experiences in the melanin-rich skincare community — and it's not your skin being difficult. It's your skin responding correctly to a product that wasn't formulated with your skin in mind.

Most mainstream skincare — even "dermatologist-tested" — is developed and primarily tested on lighter skin tones. The irritation thresholds, penetration rates, and pigmentation responses are all different on deeper skin. A product with thousands of 5-star reviews can still cause new dark spots on yours. That's not a failure on your part. That's just biology and a gap in how the industry works.

When something doesn't work: consider whether the active concentration is too high, whether the formula contains fragrance or other sensitizers, and whether the reviews you're reading actually reflect your skin type.

During an active eczema flare: skip all actives. Your barrier is already compromised and acids will make it worse. Focus on barrier repair only — ceramides, colloidal oatmeal, gentle moisturization.

During stable periods, you can introduce very gentle exfoliation. PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) are the most tolerated option for reactive skin — largest molecules, surface-only action. Mandelic acid is the next gentlest option. Start once a week maximum and only increase if your skin is clearly handling it.

Always listen to your skin more than any schedule or routine.

Not exactly — but it can feel that way, because melanin-rich skin runs in families. The tendency to develop manchas after irritation is directly related to how much melanin your skin produces, and that is inherited. The more melanin, the more responsive your pigment cells are to any kind of inflammation.

So the manchas themselves aren't passed down — but the skin type that makes you prone to them is. Which also means the same gentle, consistent approach works across generations.

Long-standing manchas (years old) are harder to fade than recent ones. Patience and consistency over months is what actually moves the needle — not intensity over days.

UV exposure is one of the biggest reasons PIH and hyperpigmentation worsen in summer — it increases melanin production everywhere, and in areas already pigmented, that response is even stronger. You don't have to stop going outside. You just need to protect the skin you're treating.

SPF on body skin is non-negotiable during active treatment. Most people apply it to their face and forget their legs, arms, and décolleté — which is exactly where the manchas are. Any SPF 30+ applied consistently before sun exposure makes a visible difference over a summer.

Also: heat and sweat amplify friction, especially in skin folds and inner thighs. Looser clothing and anti-chafe products matter more in warm months.

Lemon juice and DIY citrus are widely shared as "natural brighteners" in Latina and Black skincare communities — but they consistently make things worse on melanin-rich skin. The pH is far outside what skin can handle, and they dramatically increase UV sensitivity. The irritation they cause creates new PIH faster than they could ever fade existing spots.

It's not that your skin is resistant. It's that many shared remedies were developed for or tested on lighter skin — or aren't formulated at all. The ingredients with real clinical evidence for PIH on melanin-rich skin: azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, niacinamide, mandelic acid, alpha-arbutin.

If you've been at this for a long time without results, a consultation with a dermatologist who specializes in skin of color is worth it — not because something is wrong with your skin, but because they can use prescription concentrations that OTC products can't match.

Coconut oil is deeply moisturizing with real antimicrobial properties — and for very dry, non-acne-prone skin it can work well. But for skin prone to ingrown hairs, KP, or follicular bumps, it's one of the most comedogenic (pore-clogging) oils available. It can block the follicle and make ingrowns and KP visibly worse.

The difference between coconut oil and something like squalane is pore compatibility. Both moisturize effectively. But squalane closely mimics the skin's own sebum and is unlikely to clog follicles — which matters a lot when dealing with bumps and texture.

Your abuela's skin may be different from yours. There's no universal answer. But if coconut oil is going on areas where you're getting ingrowns or bumps, it's worth trying a lighter alternative.

Yes — including essential oils. For melanin-rich skin prone to PIH, fragrance is one of the most common contact irritants. The inflammatory response it causes creates the same dark spots you're trying to prevent. Leaving fragrance out was a deliberate choice, not a compromise.

AVA and NORA are formulated for body use — legs, thighs, and arms. We don't recommend using them on the face, as facial skin is thinner and more reactive to actives at body-use concentrations. For facial concerns, a dermatologist who specializes in skin of color is the best starting point.

NORA is a highly concentrated dry oil — a few drops is all you need. The dropper gives you precise control over the amount, so nothing goes to waste. We also chose a glass bottle intentionally: glass preserves the integrity of active ingredients like Vitamin C and Bakuchiol that can degrade in plastic over time. To apply, warm 3-4 drops between your palms and pat gently onto skin.
