    The brightening ingredient market is large and often contradictory. Some of the most heavily marketed options for dark spots are poorly suited to melanin-rich or sensitive skin — and some actively worsen the problem they claim to solve. Why dark spots are different on melanin-rich skin

 

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) occurs when melanocytes — pigment-producing skin cells — overproduce melanin in response to inflammation or injury. On melanin-rich skin, melanocytes are more reactive and respond more intensely to the same trigger, producing darker and more persistent marks.

 

This has two important implications for treatment. First, the same level of irritation that causes mild redness on lighter skin can cause significant new PIH on darker skin. Second, many brightening ingredients that are routinely recommended in mainstream skincare cause enough irritation to trigger new dark spots while fading old ones — running in place, or worse.

 

The most effective approach for melanin-rich skin is not the most aggressive approach. It is the approach that minimizes new inflammation while consistently supporting the skin's natural pigment regulation.

Vitamin C (specifically: Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate)

Vitamin C inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme responsible for melanin production — which helps prevent new dark spots from forming and supports the gradual fading of existing ones. However, not all forms of Vitamin C are equal. Standard L-ascorbic acid is unstable, oxidizes quickly, and at higher concentrations can cause irritation that triggers PIH.

   

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate is an oil-soluble, stable form of Vitamin C that penetrates more effectively and causes significantly less irritation. It is better suited to sensitive and melanin-rich skin than standard Vitamin C formulations.

 
   
   

Mandelic Acid
